ABOUT BAHIA BUSTAMANTE - in their own words:

Bahia Bustamante is a small, family-run project, a private wildlife sanctuary Lodge set in remote Patagonia by the sea.

We share the lifestyle within a natural paradise.  Encouraging a sustainable and holistic way of living, flowing with nature and enjoying the beauty of simplicity. We have designed an active and committed experience, which promotes conservation; aiming to raise awareness and a stronger connection with our planet.

This is an invitation to experience the  authentic Patagonia, by amazing diversity of marine and land wildlife (penguins, sea lions, seabirds, guanacos, rheas and more) - the coast is a National Park and also part of  "Blue Patagonia" UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

Only a few places in the world are home to such a great number and diversity of seabirds and marine wildlife. Founded in the 1950s as a seaweed settlement, more than 400 seaweed workers and their families lived here. There was a church, a school, a police department and everything this small community needed.

Staying Bahia Bustamante also means taking a journey  to the past, to discover the amazing life of the pioneers in this truly remote place in Patagonia back then.

Bahia Bustamante is a unique experience for nature lovers who enjoy discovery, far off destinations and a landscape of endless surprise.  True ove and respect for our land and nature itself, is perceived and shared by our guests from the very first moment they arrive. We look forward to welcoming you!

OUR OCEAN VINEYARD - click here for more info
From
the large windows of the Restaurant "La Prove" we get an impressive view: the vineyards and the sparkling sea behind, full of birds. But also we can spot the curious Lesser Rheas, constantly wandering around, picking on flowers and seeds. The oceanic wines are a dream come true. A project that we share with the prestigious Ver Sacrum Winery from Mendoza. It began in October 2018, when we planted 2,000 vines by the coast, being 70% of them Semillion grapes and the remaining 30% is Pinot Noir.  In 2021 we added 2,000 more wvines, incorporating the Albarino variety and increasing the amount of Pinot Noir. In addition to wine, we produce quince cider with the fruits of a hundred-year old quince plantation.

OUR VEGETABLE GARDEN
Always with conservation & respect towards our environment in mind, we have renovated our vegetable garden, transforming it into a biodynamic project. We have built a new circular structure, which flows with the rythm of water and light, where fruits, vegetables and flowers live and collaborate.
We follow a biodynamic calendar, the moon, the sun and the astrology to enhance the health and production of plants.

Our vegetable garden provides our Restaurant with fruits, olives, berries and a wide variety of vegetables, aromatic herbs and edible flowers.

SEA SALT & SALICORNIA HARVESTING
By the sea, we continue to harvest sea salt and salicornia manually, not only to be used at our Restaurant, but also toprovide it to some of the best chefs in our country, like German Martitegui and Narda Lepes, who discovered new flavours here after their stay with us.

OLIVES
Inlands, we have planted more than 300 olive trees; the first step towards olive oil production.

HISTORY:
Mr. Lorenzo Soriano (Baeza, Jaen, Spain, 1901-1987) arrived in this area in 1953, searching for seaweed so as to be able to extract the colloids that enabled the production of Malvic hair gel, which he had started in 1947. After travelling all over the Patagonian coastline in search of seaweed, he discovered Bahía Bustamante, known then as the “Rotten Bay”, due to the accumulation of rotten seaweed. He decided to carry out a preliminary research and then, together with his four sons, started the seaweed harvest. It was at that moment that this exclusive village was born.

Back then, there were only two constructions by the sea. They settled there and began to build Bahía Bustamante. They built houses and rooms for more than 400 employees, with its own school, church, police station, warehouses, workshop and grocery store, among other things.
Almost fifty years ago, the Soriano family built this village in a desolated area of Patagonia, living with the richness of nature. Today it opens its doors so that you can also be part of its history and get to know its main activity: “the Seaweed Industry.”

THE MAIN LODGE:
Overlooking the sea and our ocean vineyard, the old General Store is now transformed into the common areas - Restaurant, Living Room and Small Memorial room.     It still keeps its typical Patagonia spirit.

"LA PROVE" RESTAURANT:
Our kitchen runs on nature! We work with local products, such as fish and sea-food, lamb meat, seaweed and more, depending on availability. We have our own biodynamic veggie garden and fruit trees as well.  We offer a fixed menu.

BAR & LIVING ROOM:

Perfect to relax after a day of exploration. In the library you will find books, bird guides and more. We have a well provided bar.

Bar & Living room: Perfect for reading or simply watching the sea through the immense windows. A very comfortable way to still be part of the landscape, enjoying the special lighting and fabulous sunsets that the Patagonia offers. All of this comfort sheltered from the wind. In the small library you may have access to the works about birds that inhabit our shores, left year after year by the Biologists that visit us. The bar is situated in a corner of the living room, were drinks are served to go with the Poker or Truco Tournaments that sometimes carry on until the wee hours!!

THE MEMORIAL ROOM:
An introduction to the history of the ranch.
The Museum: A small museum with old photographs of the village and its old ways. Showing the first steps of the seaweed industry worldwide, that took place in our coast. This was how Bahia Bustamante was born in 1950. Going further back in time lithography’s of the Malaspina Expedition in 1789 are also shown. Two ships arrived to our shore, Malaspina being the leader of the expedition and Bustamante, the Captain of the second vessel. The museum also owns a telescope that allows the study of stars by night.
