Gastronomy

Bounty from both the sea and farm make dining in this city interesting and varied. Chileans eat late so if you wish to be fashionable the dinner hour begins around 9:30 pm.

There are restaurants that specialize in local foods that should not be missed such as locos (abalone), chupe de loco (stew), machas (razor clams eaten raw or baked), steamed cholgas  (mussels), panqueques de centollas   (crepes with crabmeat filling), gambas  (large deep water shrimp), langostinos  (tiny rock lobsters) and erizos  (sea urchins). Meat and fowl are also enticingly prepared, as are a wide variety of delicious local vegetables and fruits.

You'll also find a variety of other excellent restaurants dedicated to Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, and Spanish cuisines to name a few.

Chile is famous for its vineyards and their wines. Many local lable wines are excellent and reasonably priced. Or try the small but potent "Pisco Sour"
