Santiago About Santiago |
Santiago, Chile
's capital, is a bustling modern city uniquely surrounded on three sides by one of the world's most fertile valleys and to the east by the awe-inspiring Andes mountain range. A mixture of both modern and colonial architecture with charming suburbs, skyscrapers and modern shopping plazas co-exist here.Santiago was founded in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia. One of the most historic sites of interest is Cerro Santa Lucia Hill where paths take you through lovely gardens to a well-preserved fort he built atop the hill when he founded the city. During the colonial period it was one of many Spanish administrative centers. After its independence the city became more important; and in the 1870s an urban plan was drafted. In the 19th century the city continued to grow with many elites getting even more wealthy in mining and shipping. Santiago spread rapidly in the 20th century with new neighborhoods reaching to foot of the Andes.
Be sure to allow yourself time in the city to take advantage of all this great city has to offer from its many museums, historic points of interest, days tours to the mountains or to famous Vina del Mar seaside resort, haciendas, vineyards and wine-tasting excursions, and excellent shopping ranging from handicrafts to jewelry.
