About Gotca Falls

ACTIVITIES - compliments of Gotca Andes Lodge

In the Andes of Chachapoyas we find a perfect balance between archeology, nature and living cultures. Cloud forests are welcoming the fortified city of Kuelap or the villages of the Gran Vilaya. Impressive waterfalls slide down endless cliffs, like Gotca. And we find mausoleums like Revash or the Karajia sarcophasgus, unique in the whole continent. And we are always accompanied by the sensation of traveling to a region where we are pioneers, because tourism, which ends up invading everything,  has not landed here. Chachapoyas is, with all security, the best kept secret in Peru.

CHACHAPOYAS AND THE ANDES
These experiences will allow you to learn, in a few hours, essential and
interesting aspects related to nature and cultural manifestations of the
Chachapoyas valleys.

GOTCA
The Gotca waterfall with 771 m, is the thir5d highest in the world. There are
different routes to reach them, the most popular part of Cocachimba to
access its base. In the 5.5 km of the trail we will cross cane crops, with their
traditional mills, to later enter a cloud forest, with trees covered with orchids,
lichens and mosses. The advisor of the Communal Association will
accompany us to explain both the ecosystem that surrounds us and the
history of their community and the falls.

KUELAP FORTRESS
Kuelap is the most important archaeological site in the northern Peruvian
Andes.
It forms an architectural ensemble of stone characterized by its
monumentality, with a large artificial platform, seated on the rock ridge at
the top of Cerro Barreta (3000 meters about sea level). The platform extends
for almost 600 m and is surrounded by a wall that reaches 19 m in height at
some points.

KARAJIA AND CHACHAPOYAS
In Karajia we find a set of sorcophagi (coffins whose shape follows the outline
of the human figure) representative of the funerary tradition of the
Chachapoyas. They are unique for their extraordinary height, up to 2.50m,
and careful preparation. They were found in the Karajia ravine in 1985 by the
Peruvian archaeologist Federico Kauffmann Doig. Being located at the top of
a ravine that is difficult to access, they were kept safe from looters.

LEYMEBAMBA, REVASH AND YERBABUENA
The Revash mausoleums are a necropolis belonging to the Chachapoyas
culture. They were collective tombs that occupy natural caves or excavated in
the rocky wall of an imposing ravine. Kauffmann Doig maintains that the
mausoleums are replicas of the houses where the people of the area lived.

POMACOCHAS LAGOON AND THE SPATULA-TAILED
HUMMINGBIRD
The North Amazon circuit is one of the areas with the greatest biodiversity of
birds in the world and the great variety of hummingbirds is the best example
of this. In Huembo we will visit the Spatula-tailed Hummingbird Observation
Center, where we will experience the magic of bring able to see the
sparkling flights of up to ten species of hummingbirds.
