Also found in the wetlands (An Internationally Significant Bird Area) we have many beautiful water fowl such as the Chiloe Wigeon, Yellow-Billed Pintail and Silver Teal. Many thousands of Gentoo, Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins breed on Pebble Island each summer, spearheading the list of 42 resident bird species. In addition, each year the island attracts many rare avian visitors from South America and beyond.

Southern sea lions can often be found resting at secluded spots around the coastline and can also be spotted swimming and hunting offshore.

We frequently see Commerson’s and more occasionally Peale’s Dolphins surfing in the bright blue waters off our beaches or fishing amongst the kelp beds. Later in the season whales migrate past the Falklands and can been occasionally seen from the cliffs.

Frequently guests are lucky enough to see four species of penguin in one day (Magellanic, Gentoo, Rockhopper and Macaroni) and the occasional very lucky visitor may also see a King penguin who will have come ashore to moult. This makes Pebble Island one of the few very special places in the world where you can see so many different penguin species within such close proximity.

NOTE: Overland tours are a must due to the size of the island and the experienced drivers/guides will make sure that you don’t miss the particular points of interest. The two fully guided tours in 4x4 vehicles offer ample opportunity to see the abundant wildlife and spectacular scenery further afield from the settlement.

SPECIAL & IMPORTANT NOTE

One special note: It is tradition in the islands to discard your footgear in the sun-room foyer before entering the main house. This has been the practical way over the years to keep the outdoors out and in the indoors cleaner. And after a hard day of exploring the spectacular wildlife of the area, your shoes can be pretty grubby. Plan to bring along a pair of warm socks or slippers to wear inside the house.
