FALKLAND ISLANDS Darwin |
|
|
Its hard to imagine how Darwin was once
the largest settlement after Stanley the permanent population now stands at just 7
but the location has lost none of its appeal. Now,
its proximity to the international airport at Mount Pleasant (about 45 minutes drive),
makes Darwin an ideal place to start or finish your Falklands holiday, and having Darwin
airstrip right on the doorstep means they are conveniently placed for local flights to
other settlements. A visit to Bodie Creek Bridge is also worthwhile as it is the worlds southernmost suspension bridge. Other activities at Darwin include angling, rather interesting golf on their own 9 hole par 3 course, and excellent walking. |
Accommodation - Darwin House
Darwin House, with its great water-front setting, promises good wholesome country food (using home grown and organically produced ingredients as much as possible) and warm comfortable accommodation:
Converted modern farmhouse
5 rooms (1 double, 1 twin, 3 family with double and single bed)
Two family rooms ensuite (Jacuzzi bath); other 3 rooms share two bathrooms
Full board accommodation
Large comfortable lounge, conservatory and honesty bar
Full and half day guided tours
Transport to/from Mount Pleasant Airport
First Falkland Islands members of Wholesome Food Association
No smoking policy throughout
One special note: It is tradition in the islands to discard your footgear in the sun-room foyer before entering the main house. This has been the practical way over the years to keep the outdoors out and in the indoors cleaner. And after a hard day of exploring the spectacular wildlife of the area, your shoes can be pretty grubby. Plan to bring along a pair of warm socks or slippers to wear inside the house. |
