Back to Itinerary

ALTITUDE: Altitudes vary throughout the trip, fluctuating between 11,800 and 15,400 feet above sea level. Potosí, where the trip begins, is located at 13,120 feet above sea level; San Pedro de Atacama is located at 8,200 feet above sea level. During the first day of the travesía we will take light walks that are not physically demanding, in order to acclimatize ourselves for the remainder of the trip.

CLIMATE: Uyuni features a similar arid climate as San Pedro de Atacama, however due to its higher altitude it is colder. Day temperatures vary between 2 ºC (35 F) and 15 ºC (59 F) in winter (May-August), and -20 ºC (-4 F) in the evening, between 5 ºC (41 F) and 20 ºC (68 F) from September to December. Between January and March, the “Altiplanic winter” can make roads impassable, the reason why the Uyuni journey is available from April to December only.
In San Pedro, the Altiplanic winter is weaker, with occasional rain, and a good year-round climate and more than 90% sunny days. Day temperatures on average are 8º C ( 46F) to 23º C (73 F)during winter, and 12º C (54º F) to 25º C (77 F) during summer.
