CLOTHING:
Necessary equipment, principally:

  • Trekking boots
  • Trekking pants
  • A base layer of thermal underwear, with thick socks
  • A thin fleece as a second layer
  • A wind-proof jacket as a third layer
  • A goose-down jacket as a fourth layer
  • Thick gloves, and ideally an additional thinner pair
  • Sunglasses with UV protection, ideally with lateral protection
  • Sunblock (factor 30 minimum)
  • Small backpack for trekking (20 to 30 liters)
  • Casual shoes

FAQs:

1. What medical services are available?
All of our guides have Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certifications, meaning they are qualified to assist during situations in remote areas. Guides travel with an extensive first-aid kit and oxygen. At explora safety begins by not taking unnecessary risks, and by preparing our expert guides, who have in-depth knowledge of the area. Local clinics may provide some medical attention; larger towns will have more medical facilities available.
NOTE:
        Journey Through Uyuni and Journey from Uyuni: During the entire overland journey there are no hospitals nearby, and helicopter rescue is not available.
        Journey to Cachi and Journey from Cachi: Throughout the overland journey there are no hospitals nearby. Helicopter rescue is not available.
        Journey to El Chalten and Journey from El Chalten: Through much of the overland journey there are no hospitals nearby and helicopter rescue is not available.
               In El Chaltén there is a basic medical facility that will attend travelers with advance warning. For more serious cases there is a complete medical clinic in
               Calafate, 2 hours from El Chaltén.

3. What services are included in the program?
Daily excursions with bilingual guides. Lodging, 3 meals per day, open bar, airport transfers.

4. What is the group size on a travesía?
The maximum group size is 6 travelers, along with an expert crew made up of a guide and a 4-person staff (driver, cook and assistants).

5. What documents do I need?
An up-to-date passport.
For Journeys from Uyuni, a visa is required for Bolivia. (check www.rree.gov.bo for visa information)

6. How long are the van rides?

Journey Through Uyuni and Journey from Uyuni
                Between 2 and 8 hours, depending on the day,
                often on poorly conditioned roads.
Journey to Cachi and Journey from Cachi
Journey to El Chalten and Journey from El Chalten
                No more than 3 to 4 continous hours

7. What vehicles are used during the travesía?
We use a Toyota Land Cruiser and comfortable van outfitted for the journey.

8. What communications equipment does explora bring on journeys?
Each vehicle has a satellite telephone, as well as a GPS, compass and maps.

9. What kind of food is served?
Our travesías are accompanied by a chef and support staff. We strive to surprise our guests with flavorful cuisine that is healthy and suitable for the physical demands of the trip, including altitude and cold weather. Our menus are designed to provide high-quality meals that include local recipes and ingredients.

10. Is there much luggage space?
Space is limited, for that reason we ask that each traveler bring only what is necessary.

11. Can I recharge batteries for electronics?
Yes, but you must bring your own recharger.
