Built on rocky ground in the low mountains south of Belo Horizonte, Ouro Preto ("Black Gold", named because the gold found was covered in a thin black layer of iron oxide) was founded in 1711 and declared a national monument in 1933. Its cobblestone streets wind up and down steep hills crowned with 13 churches. Mansions, fountains, churches, vistas of terraced gardens, ruins, towers shining with coloured tiles, all blend together to mantain a delightful 18th century atmosphere.

Ouro Preto can be visited in a long day from Belo Horizonte, but an overnight stay affords more time to explore this historic town and to enjoy the scenic setting.
